  • Start of the War

    In late June of 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinanted by a Serbian nationalist. That is what started the actual war.
  • Machine Guns

    In 1914 a machine gun would take 4-6 operators and could fire 400-600 small-calibre rounds per minute.
  • Youngest to Serve

    The youngest to serve was Sidney Lewis. He was only 12. Many soldiers lied about there age to join the war.
  • Trenches

    In 1916 Germans constructed trenches and dozens of shelterproof bunkers leading up to the Battle of the Somme.
  • Dogs in War

    During the Battle of Verdun in 1916 French soldiers found themselves boxed in by Germans with no way of humans bringing them messages. That's when the French peeked over the trench to see a dog in a mask bringing rhem a message. The French soldiers made it out of the trench alive.
  • Drafted to Army

    After working at the Duluth YMCA Charles Stanley Lamb was drafted to the Army
  • Letter to Dad

    On April 4th 1918 he wrote a letter to his dad that said "was given a O.D. (Olive drab) uniform a poncho and a gun a few days ago and feel like a real soldier now".
  • Letter to Mary

    May 23rd 1918 he was stationed in France. He wrote to Mary "I'm trying to remember my French. Oh how I wish I had done my own work instead of copying yours"!
  • Letters

    Between 1918 and 1919 he wrote 85 plus post cards to his mother, father, Mary, and other relatives.
  • Discharged

    After the Army he was discharged in France in April.
