  • 1923 Meyer v. Nebraska

Nebraska passed a law prohibiting teaching grade school children any language other than English. Meyer, who taught German in a Lutheran school, was convicted under this law. This case only allowed foreign language to be taught in high school. In grade levels below high school it was forbidden to learn and hear anything other than the native language of English. This affected our English Language Learners tremendously because it caused a barrier.
