  • Forced Schooling

    Native American children forced to attend boarding schools for purposes of assimilation. It is important that we understand the misuse of public education.
  • The Dawning of Progressive Education

    A noticable shift in pedagogy which placed great importance on the concept of applied knowledge. Sparked by education reformists such as John Dewey (1859-1952), many techniques crafted during this era are still in practice today.
  • Compulsory Education For All

    All states mandate access to free and public education through elementary school.
  • National School Lunch Act

    Deemed a "national security," the National School Lunch Act is established to "safeguard the health and wellbeing of the Nation's children." Additionally, it expands access to school lunch for low income students.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Landmark case which overturned Plessy v. Ferguson and ruled the findings of "separate but equal" to be un-constitutional. This case would have a reverberating effect in dismantling the racial segregation which permeated many of the United States' schools.
  • Title IX

    "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance..." This decision has gone a long ways in narrowing the gap between men and women in our society.
  • Lau v. Nichols

    Ruling that asserted the right for students with limited english skills to recieve access to an equal education. This landmark case is perhaps more important than ever given the great diversity that can be found in schools throughout the country.
  • Department of Education Created

    Federal Agency created with the intent of carrying out equal access to education for all and ensuring standards of academic success.
  • Wisconsin Becomes First State to Offer Voucher Program

    "Milwaukee, Wisconsin establishes a voucher program enabling low-income children to attend a private or religious school of their choice. It is the first school choice program in the U.S. to provide funding to private schools in place of a public education."
  • First Charter School Created

    Minnesota becomes home to the first charter school. "Charters are typically run by community leaders, parents, teachers or other groups under a charter agreement with the school district, state, or university." In recent years, charter schools have gained considerable attention as an "alternative" approach to education.
