  • Articles of Confederation

    States give some power to a central government. Very weak, used to preserve independence and sovereignty of the 13 states during this time. States have more power then the federal government.
  • Constitutional Convention

    James Madison's creation of the Constitution. Removal of the Articles of Confederation which gives the states less power compared to the newly formed federal government.
  • Supremacy Act

    This act states that state courts are bound by supreme law (according to the Constitution). Also, states that state constitutions must abide by federal laws/ Constitution. Gives the federal government power over states because of this.
  • 10th Amendment

    Part of the Bill of Rights. This amendment gives states and the people rights that are not prohibited by the federal government. Impacts state and federal government because it gives states power to make laws and it gives the federal government power over states.
  • Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions

    States have the right to declare acts unconstitutional. The states argued for state rights. These states nullified the Alien and Sedition Acts that restricted the public's right of freedom of speech. Gave more power to the states
  • McCulloh v. Maryland

    This cases gives the federal government more power over states to make laws that are not mentioned in the Constitution because of the Necessary and Proper Clause in the Constitution. This case also states that states can not tax federal offices.
  • Gibbson v. Ogden

    This case gives the federal government the power to regulate interstate commerce between the states. This also answers the question of the regulation of navigation in the United states.
  • Dred Scott v. Sandford

    This case states that if someone has a grandparent that was sold into slavery, that person is deemed not a citizen of the U.S.. The Supreme Court later deemed this idea unconstitutional and this idea impacts the state government most because it allowed slave owners to keep their slaves and not grant them rights.
  • Formulation of Land Grants

    Gives power to states to create higher education schools. Helps fields like engineering, agriculture, military science, and science. This program created schools like VA Tech and Ohio State University.
  • Civil War

    The Union and Confederate states fight for their beliefs. The Civil War ends with the Confederates surrender and the creation of the Reconstruction Amendments. Federal governments power over the states to enforce the amendments.
  • 14th Amendment

    One of the three Reconstruction Amendments. Gives equal protection under the law to everyone. Gives power to the federal government to force this amendment upon the states.
  • Plessy v. Ferguson

    This case gives the federal government power to advocate "separate but equal" is constitutional. This is later deemed unconstitutional because of Brown v. Board of Education.
  • Pure Food and Drug Act

    Government created this act for the purpose of consumer protection. This power is given to the federal government because of the interstate commerce act.
  • 16th Amendment

    This amendment levy's income tax on all states. The Constitution gives the federal government power over the states.
  • Gitlow v. New York

    Allows the federal government to suppress the freedom of speech to those who advocate the unlawful overthrow of the government. Courts wondered whether could review this cases do to the basis that it violated the Constitution.
  • New Deal

    During Franklin Roosevelt's in an effort to bring relief to the country, he proposed the New Deal. Gives more power to the federal government because it aids the states and allows the federal government to create laws.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    This case gives more power to the federal government to abolish the Plessy v. Ferguson idea of "separate but equal". This case states that the idea of "separate but equal" is unconstitutional and violates the 14th amendment.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    This act outlaws discrimination based on race, color, sex, or religion. Prohibits voter segregation. Gives power to the states to enforce this act in schools and public voter locations.
  • Roe v. Wade

    This case has a greater impact on the state government then federal government due to the 14th amendments involvement with abolition and women's rights. The state must regulate the interest of abortions.
  • Election of Ronald Reagan

    Ronald Reagan proposed the idea of "new federalism" which give more power to the states, compared to the federal government.
  • Americans With Disablities Act

    This act prohibits discrimination based on a disability. Gives the federal government power over states for the protection of the people.
  • United States v. Lopez

    This case gives states power over the federal government because of the lack of impact on interstate commerce and deemed this unconstitutional.
  • 104th Congress

    Both the Senate and House of Representatives are present. Was a meeting of the legislative branch of the United States during 1995-1997. Impacts federal government in the way that makes and passes laws for the county.
  • Printz v. United States

    This case goes gives more power to the states because of the lack of federal government power to compel state executives into federal service.
  • Sept. 11th 2001

    During Bushes presidency a terrorist attack happen in New York, which destroyed the Twin Towers. Due to this even the federal government gains more power for the purpose of the protection of the people. The government creates the National Security Agency to protect from future attacks.
