    Australia was colonised when the first fleet arrived at Sydney cove in Australia on the 26th of January 1788.
  • Gold was discovered

    In 1823, James McBrien discovered gold in the Fish River, east of Bathurst.
  • Schooling

    In 1850, only one in 4 kids could read and go to school. This was mainly because most families could not afford schools.
  • Gold was found

    Gold was found at Bathurst. When word got out there was a rush of people coming to see if they could get their hands on some gold.

    In 1852 Bathurst was actually declared a town.

    In 1853 Cobb and Co set up a transpot buisness. They were the main way to travel.

    Chinese men

    In 1854 there were only around about 4000 chinese men but in 1860 there were 50,000 chinese diggers. That is almost x 13.
  • Chinese attacked

    On the 4th of July, 1857, 100 diggers attacked the chinese camp. They destroyed 500 tents and made 2400 chinese diggers leave.They really wanted them gone!
  • The welcome stranger nugget

    In 1858 the welcome nugget was found by a group of men at the Red Hill Minig company area at bakery Hill Victoria (Near Ballarat). It weighed 68.98 kg, 58. It was shaped like a horse's head!
  • Largest nugget found

    The largest nugget was found at Hill End at NSW in 1872. It weighed a whopping 290kg. It's called the Holtermann nugget.
  • New Law

    In 1885 there were many chinese men coming over to Australia to dig for gold. The Victorian government wasn't happy so they made a new law that each chinese men entering Victoria had to pay 10 pounds tax. This did not work as they landed in South Australia and walked 700km to reach the Victorian goldfields. This way they did not have to pay.
