Glass Castle Summary pgs. 108-115

  • Pgs 108-109

On these pages, we see Jeanette's father petting a tiger at the zoo and encouraging his children to do the same. Because of this, they get thrown out of the zoo. This is important thing for the reader to see because it shows how reckless Rex Walls is and the lengths he will go to to show his children to not be afraid of the outdoors, and, even if he has good intentions, it is not a safe parenting style
  • Pgs 110-111

After his adventure at the zoo, Rex Walls lost his job, and the family was scraping by once again. The reader sees the importance of the school teacher who gave Jeanette money for hot lunch, and the lengths that Jeanette and Brian had to go to to eat, going dumpster diving at any chance they could. We also see another Rose Mary Walls method of parenting. While she has good intentions when she decides that Maureen needs new dresses, she shoplifts. We also see how they cheated the banks.
  • Pgs. 112-113

In these pages, we see Rex Wells falling apart and the beginning of the impact on his family. Rose Mary taught her kids to pick Rex's pockets when he passed out drunk, and Brian hiding bottles from his father so he wouldn't have anything else to drink. However, we also see the family coming together to make presents for everyone for Christmas and having high hopes about the holiday
  • Pgs 114-115

On these pages, we see the full effect of Rex's alcoholism on his family. He screamed profanities in church, and finally, he set fire to their christmas tree and ended up smashing all the presents and essentially ruining christmas, crushing the hopes of his children and wife.
