Genetics Timeline

  • Gregor Mendel

    Gregor Mendel
Gregor Mendel's experiment was test crossing pea plants. He allowed them to self pollinated in the P phase. Then he cross pollinated the rest of the plants. His contibutions were the discovery of law of segregation, princable of independent assortment, and if 1 dominate allele is present it is dominate. No dominate it is recessive.
  • William Bateson and Reginald Punnett

    William Bateson and Reginald Punnett
William Bateson and Reginald Punnett's experiment was working with pea plants. They tested two charactoristics and crossed them. They discovered linked genes and discovered the punnett square
  • Thomas Hunt Morgan

    Thomas Hunt Morgan
Thomas Hunt Morgan cross breed fruit flies to see how many had white eyes. He discovered gene mapping and crossing over to determine the offspring. He also discovered sex linked traits and recombinate frequency.
  • Archibald Garrod

    Archibald Garrod
Archibald Garrods experiment was that he observed how alkaptonuria turns urine dark red due to a chemical called alkapton. His contributions were, that he discovered the relationship between genes and potein. He also dicovered that genes dictate traits throught proteins.
  • Frederick Griffith

    Frederick Griffith
Frederick Griffith injected mice with bacteria to see if it would kill them as his experiment. His contribution was that he discovered information that led to the discovery of transformation.
  • George Beadle and Edward Tatum

    George Beadle and Edward Tatum
Their experiment was that they studied strandes of orange bread mold to see if it could grow on the usual simple growth. His contribution was that he found further evidense that the genetic mechanism of bacteria correspond to higher organisms.
  • Erwin Chargaff

    Erwin Chargaff
Erwin Chargaff experimented with DNA. He split the cells in half to see the inside of the DNA. His contributions were, he found out that the amount of ademine was equal to the amount of thymine and the amount of cytocine was equal to the amount of guanine. In addition to this, he found that A bonds with T and C bonds with G.
  • Alfred Hershey and Martha Chase

    Alfred Hershey and Martha Chase
They used bacteriaphage composed of only DNA and protein tagged by radioactive phosphurous and sulfur to dertermine if DNA was genetic material. Their contribution was, they discovered that DNA was genetic material.
  • Maurice Wilkins and Rosalind Franklin

    Maurice Wilkins and Rosalind Franklin
Their experiment was, they took and x-ray of crystallograhic photo of DNA. Their contribution was that they determined that DNA was a helix.
  • James Watson and Francis Crick

    James Watson and Francis Crick
Their experiment was making wire models to make larger replicas of what DNA looked like. Their contribution was they determined the structure of deoxyribonucleic acids
  • Marshall Nirenberg

    Marshall Nirenberg
Marshall Nirenberg's experiment was adding poly-uracil RNA into a cell free of eschericha that contained RNA, DNA and ribosomes for protein. He looked to see if no other protein would form. Added radioactive material, protein came out radioactive. His contribution was that he found the genetic cod for phenylalanine.
