  • Mendel's Pea Plants

Mendel crossbred plants to find out how they interacted. He found that there were dominant and recessive traits for each characteristic of each plant. His experiments lasted over 8 years, so there is no real date. Mendel put paper bags over his plants so they wouldn’t get outside pollination with bees. He came up with the Law of Indepentent Assortment, and the Law of Equal Segregation throug his experiments. His paper is publish in 1866.
  • DNA Identified

Friedrich Miescher figures out that DNA is an acidic substance found is a cell's nucleus.
  • Mendel is "Rediscovered"

3 scientists confirm Mendel’s experiments. They are Dutch, German, and Austrian. Mendel’s paper from his experiments is translated into English, so that many other scientists can read/test it.
  • Human Disease with Genetic Causes

There is a disease that is found with genetics as the cause. The cause of the disease was discovered by Sir Archibald Garrod. The disease is called alkaptonuria and it affects 1/500,000 people today. This is important because people know now that genetics aren’t just some scientific mumbo-jumbo, and that they can affect lives.
  • Mendel Incorrect

For some genes, Mendel’s theory of “independent assortment” is proved incorrect. Bateson and Punnentt discovered this in 1905. So, are Mendel’s theories accurate after all???
  • "Genetics" Name Suggested

William Bateson suggests the name "Genetics" for the new sceince field.
  • Heredity Theory Confirmed

The chromosome theory of hereditary is confirmed. This is important because people now know that some people are more likely to get certain diseases, so scientists/doctors can keep a closer eye on these people. It was discovered by T.H. Morgan and some of his colleagues. They discovered it by studying eye fly eye color inheritance.
  • One Gene = One Protien

Beadle and Tatum discover that one gene encodes one protein. this give scientists a better understanding of genes.
  • DNA is the Molecule that Mediates Heredity

DNA is found to mediate hereditarily. It was discovered by Avery, MacLeod, and McCarty through pneumococcus transformation experiments. This is important because it shows why kids often look like their parents, why certain diseases occur in offspring of parents who had it, and why kids and parents often think alike. It is also a big step into understanding DNA and its principals/laws. Most people didn’t believe these findings until 1952.
  • Genetic Transfer Laterally Discovered

Lederberg and Tatum discover that DNA can be laterally transfered betwen bacterial cells. This gives scientists an easier time with DNA.
  • It is Confirmed that DNA is the Molecuse that Mediates Heredity

More experiments on the mediate hereditary of DNA are performed. This time, the scientists behind it are Alfred Hershey and Martha Chase. The two scientists perform bacteriophage labeling experiments instead of pneumococcus transformation experiments. Because the results are the same as the 1944 experiments, almost everybody is convinced.
  • DNA Shape Discovered

Watson and Crick discover the shape of DNA based upon Rosalind Franklin’s data. The data was provided by Maurice Wilikins. According to the WCATY genetics timeline, DNA is a “double helix with antiparallel nucleotide chains and specific base pairing”.
  • Restriction Enzyme Purified

Restriction Enzymes cut DNA is a certain place so it can only do certain things. With this new discovery, restriction enzymes will be more accurate.
  • DNA Microarrays are Invented

With DNA microarrays, scientists can directly compare two or more DNA samples. A DNA microarray is a sheet with lots of DNA samples on it.
  • Drosophila, Arabidopsis, and Human Genomes are Complete

Scientists finish drosophila, arabidopsis, and human genomes. this will help with understanding DNA even more.
