  • Establishment of the American Association on Mental Deficiency (AAMD)

    The American association of mental deficiency was created in the late 1800s and was created to promote an understanding and support for individuals with intellectual and developmental disorders and disabilities. This leads the way for advancements in special education.
  • Spanish Braille code standardized for blind students

    Spanish brail became the standard for the Blind when it comes to reading. This also happened in the late 1800s. Spanish brail provides a tactile reading and writing system for the Blind. This provided a standard of education for the Blind.
  • Establishment of the Council for Exceptional Children

    In 1922 the Council for Exceptional Children was created in the United States. Its purpose was to help children with exceptionalities get proper education. This organization was helped advocate for the rights and needs of students with disabilities. And helped with professional development for educators.  
  • Establishment of the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC)

    Created in 1953 The National Association of Gifted Children helped to advocate for intellectually gifted students. The NAGG played a role in promoting specific programs to build skills and talents of gifted children.
  • Establishment of the Learning Disabilities Association of America

    Created in 1963 The Learning Disabilities Association was built to support individuals with learning disabilities and to advocate for the educational needs of children with disabilities. The business promotes and provides resources and provides assistance for teachers.
  • Establishment of the Autism Society of America

    Created in 1965 the Autism Society of America was founded for the purpose of improving the lives of children and adults of the autism spectrum. This organization advocates for the rights and promote public awareness.  
  • Establishment of the Association for Behavior Analysis International (ABAI)

    Created in 1974 the Association for Behavior Analysis Interventional helped to form a way to diagnose and apply ways to address behavioral issues with students with disabilities. Important fact ABAI has helped with evidence-based intervention.
  • Introduction of the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE)

    Implemented in 1975, Least Restrictive Environment deals with keep Specia education students in the general education classroom as much as possible. It encourages inclusion of all children in school.
  • Establishment of the National Association for Down Syndrome

    Created in 1979 the National Association for Down Syndrome promoted support for people with Down Syndrome. NADS plays an important role in advocating and raising awareness for the cause. It also supports educators who need help providing accommodations.
  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)

    Created in the early 90s Individuals with Disabilities Education Act or IDEA, helped to create what special education is today. The new law helped to expand the rights and protection given to students with disabilities. It's important because it creates IEPs and inclusive practices.
