The Phantom of the Opera timeline

  • Opera House

    Charles Garneir began building the Opera House in Pairs as the request of Napoleon the 3. He wanted to build it to modernize Paris after the first industrial revolution. Paris had been going through some rough patches and wanted to build monuments, public parks, and new roads to assure the public everything was OK.
  • The finished product

    The opera house began to be built in 1861. It took a total of 14 years to be completed. The opera house is beautifully built with special architecture features like no other building in the world. It still stands in Paris today and is admired by millions.
  • Salle des Capucines

    After being built, it was called Salle Des Capucines. It was that name for a while but later changed to Opera de Paris due to its location.
  • For the love of theater

    During this time, he was offered a job at L'Echo de Paris to combine his knowledge of law and passion for theater as court reporter and drama critic. This was a period of his life that opened many doors for him for the future. He experienced many things after recieving this job and caused him to write amazing books.
  • Tragic occation

    While visiting the opera house, Gaston Leroux, the author of the book "The Phantom of the Opera", witnessed the chandelier in the middle of the ceiling fall and kill one of the performers on stage. He then got the idea to write one of the most famous books ever, The Phantom of the Opera.
  • The Russian Revolution

    This time period was when the Russian Revolution was taking place. He began to be a journalist around this time and was the international correspondent for the newspaper in Paris, Le Matin. He covered the Russian Revolution and that was one of his famous journals.
  • Russian Revolution

    Gaston Leroux who is the author of this book was present during this time of the Russian Revolution. Before writing the famous book, he was a journalist and his job was to investagate and cover news stories.The Russian Revolution began in 1905 and Leroux, was to cover the story. This began his love for writting.
  • Changing lifestyle

    In previous years, he had a job being a journalist. In 1907, he suddenly dropped journalism and began writing fiction. He wrote multiple books, but the one that stood out the most and the most famous was the book, "The Phantom of the Opera."
  • Starting The Phantom of the Opera

    During this time, he began writing The Phantom of the Opera. This book was just a rough draft and later became famous. It didn't take him to long to create and write this book. It was just a serial during 1910-1911, but later became a book.
  • Published book

    This year was a great year for Leroux. His book finally became published and instantly was a hit. He had written many other great books, but when this book came around, it was like none of his other work mattered. This book was also turned into a movie later on.
