France and Englan had fought in the war. George Washington was the American hero that started the french and indian war. This war was fought over territories. By 1760 the british had won the war and taken Canada from the French.

British troops had orders to arrest the sons of liberty. Paul Revere galloped warning, "British are coming!" John Parker and 70 Minutemen were waiting to attack. The British overpowered the minutemen. Outside of concord british were forced to retreat by minutemen.

British wanted to capture New York City. They had attacked washington's army. British had avoided the capture and retreated, the british occupy New York City for the rest of the war, washington was humiliated by the loss.

Washington launched a surprize attack. He captured over 800 hessian prisoners. Hessian was a German soldiers hired by the british.

Washington captures another 300 British soldiers at Princeton New Jersy. Washington would then lose the b=Battle of Brandywine and Germantown as a result.

Britsh planned to cut off New England from the rest of the colonies. Horatio Gates surrounded Burgoyne's remaining forces at Saratoga. Burgoyne surrendered. This battle was a big turning point in the war.

Washington spent cold winter at valley forge. Troops were in desperate need of food and warm clothing. The french volunteer Marquis de Lafayette to help and train the continental army.

Britsh General Lord Cornwallis moved his troops to Virginia. Washington had over 16,000 French and American soldiers ready to fight. Washington leads a three week attack. On Oct. 17, 1781 Cornwallis surrenders and americans gain their independence.
