  • Frederick Douglass Born into Slavery

    Frederick Douglass was born as a slave in Maryland. This is significant because it sets up a type of mindset of inequality in one's head, which, I think, provided a boost for Douglass to support gender equality.
  • Douglass Signs the Declaration of Sentiments

    Douglass Signs the Declaration of Sentiments

    During the Seneca Falls Convention, Douglass signs a document called the Declaration of Sentiments. Much like the Declaration of Independence, this document lists out the wants of women and the hardships they go through. All of this is to persuade others into joining their cause, which Douglass signed off on along with 32 other men. But, after going public, many people revoked their signature due to criticism.
  • Douglass is Invited to a Convention

    Elizabeth M’Clintock invited Douglass to the women rights convention in Seneca Falls, New York. Here, Douglass gives a speech arguing that if we give rights to men, women should be given them as well. This is where he mentions that rights do not belong to a single sex.
  • Douglass and Friends and the American Equal Rights Association

    Douglass along with Elizabeth Stanton and Susan B. Anthony worked on the American Equal Rights Association. This organization had a goal that wanted equal rights for all Americans regardless of race and gender. This was especially true for suffrage
