The 60 men wheelmen were united by the challage of embarking unprecedented text of endurance. They also wanted the race to be 1,500 miles clockwise loop of the country running from Paris.

De Gaulle was an intelligent, hardworking, and zealous young soldier and, in his military career, a man of original mind, great self-assurance, and outstanding courage.
