    The war began because 95,000 soldiers from North Korea decided to invade South Korea. It was also a way for them to unite the entire country under a single type of government. While South Korea had the Soviets' help, North Korea had the US as allies.

    Joseph Stalin Dies
    Stalin was the dictator of the Soviet Union from 1929 to 1953. He was also one of the most powerful and murderous dictators in the world. When his death came it upset many people, and they even came out to the streets in order to warn him.
  • Warsaw Pact Signed

    Warsaw Pact Signed
    The Warsaw Pact was created to counteract NATO, the signing of this act symbolized the Soviet dominance in Europe. It also increased the international negotiating power of the Soviet Union. The pact was soon as a potential militaristic threat and a direct opposition to American capitalism.

    JFK Assassination
    While riding in a motorcade in Dealey Plaza, Dallas, Texas, Kennedy was fatally shot by Lee Harvey Oswald while he was riding with his wife, Gov. Connally, and his wife. Lyndon Johnson was sworn in as President shortly after the death of JFK. After Kennedy's assassination, the government began to work on the reforms that the late President had wanted to pass.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    Civil Rights Act of 1964
    This act was first proposed by President JFK before his assassination. The federal government had tended to stay out of the civil rights struggle until 1964. In 1964, President Johnson pushed for this act, which put a prohibition on public discrimination, gave Justice Department permission to sue states that discriminated against women and minorities, and promised equal workplace opportunities.

    Voting Rights Act
    This act aimed to overcome the barriers that kept the African-Americans from voting. It eliminated poll taxes, literacy requirements, and other techniques that whites had used to keep blacks from voting. However, it didn't eliminate racism or poverty for African-Americans.

    The first public hints of improved U.S.-China relations came when the American Ping Pong team received a surprised invitation from their Chinese colleagues for an all expense paid visit to the People's Republic. They were the first group of Americans allowed into China since the communist takeover in 1949. The Cold War tensions between US and China were lessened thanks to ping pong. Their trip led to a renewed dialogue between the nations, opening the door for President Nixon's own China visit.

    Watergate Scandal
    Watergate was a major political scandal where several burglars were arrested inside the office of the Democratic National Committee, located in the Watergate building in Washington, D.C. The prowlers were connected to President Richard Nixon's reelection campaign, and they had been caught attempting to wiretap phones and steal secret document. Nixon aided in covering up this scandal, trying to stop the FBI from investigating the crime, destroying evidence and firing uncooperative staff members.

With impeachment proceedings underway against him for his involvement in the Watergate affair, Nixon was finally bowing to pressure from the public and Congress to leave the White House. This led the American public to lose their trust to the government, following the already lessened trust from the Vietnam War. Gerald R. Ford was sworn as the 38th President of the United States.

    John Lennon, a famous singer from the Beatles, was shot and killed by Mark David Chapman. Lennon's criticism was so harsh against Nixon administration that they tried to have him deported back to England so he wouldn't cause any more trouble.

    Jenny, who was seen doing many drugs, eventually contracted a virus unknown to the doctors of her time. This marks the HIV/AIDs outbreak in the 80's. AIDs was originally called the gay-related immune deficiency (GRID) due to there being many cases where gay men contract the disease. AIDs cases were also being reported in European countries.
