    The Korean War began when North Korean troops armed with soviet weapons crossed the 38th parallel (the boundary between the Democratic South Korea and the communist North Korea which was split by the U.S. and USSR after WW2) to attack South Korea. This invasion was the first military action of the cold war. President Truman sent American troops to join South Korean and United Nation forces because they were concerned about the forces of international communism.

    Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white passenger on a Montgomery, Alabama, city bus boycott. Park’s helped initiate the civil rights movement in the United States. The leaders for the black community organized a bus boycott after Park’s was convicted of violating the segregation laws.

    Egypt nationalized the Suez Canal when Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser nationalizes the British and French owned Suez Canal. After World War 2, Egypt pressed for evacuation of British troops from the Suez Canal zone to reopen it to commercial shipping.

    The Interstate highway act was authorize by the Federal Aid Highway Act, known as the National Interstate and Defense Highways Act of 1956. It was built 41,000 miles of highway, consisting of main expressways that would connect the nation’s major cities which would ease the commute from suburbs to cities.

    The Soviet Union successfully launched Sputnik 1, the world’s first artificial satellite took orbit around the earth on its elliptical path. This began the space race between United Stated and the Soviet Union which lead to U.S forming the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The purpose was to explore space and aeronautics or flight research and compete with the soviets.

    The Bay of Pigs invasion was launched by President Kennedy allowing the U.S Central Intelligence Agency where 1,400 American-trained Cubans who fled their homes from Cuban nationalist, Fidel Castro to overthrow him. This invasion was badly outnumbered by Castro’s troops and U.S Cuban troops had to surrender.

    Martin Luther King Jr. leads the March on Washington for jobs and freedom. It was a massive protest aimed to draw attention to continuing challenges and inequalities faced by African Americans a century after emancipation. This was also when he had his iconic speech “I have a Dream”. His death was remembered each year, known as Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a U.S. federal holiday since 1986.

    The Black panther party were an African American revolutionary party founded in 1966 by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale. The purpose of the party was to protect African American residents from acts of police brutality by having 2000 members patrol the neighborhoods.

    The Watergate scandal was a break in at the democratic National Committee offices in the Watergate complex in Washington. The several burglars were connected to President Richard Nixon’s reelection campaign, and they had been caught wiretapping phones and stealing documents. Nixon involved in the break in tried to cover up. The court case forced videos of his interactions, Nixon became the first president in American History to resign because he wanted to avoid impeachment.

April 1975, the capture of Saigon by the North Vietnamese Army marked the end of the war

    Hungary lifted all restrictions on GDR crossing the border. East Berlin’s communist party, spokesman, Gunther Schabowski, announced that citizens of the GDR were free to cross the country’s borders. This was the opening and fall of the berlin wall.
