Note how this event occurred in the South where discrimination was most prominent and the Civil Rights Movement met the most resistance, even with federal support.

    Key Concept 8.2 Lyndon Baines Johnson is sworn into the presidency after winning the election. He signs the Voting Rights Act of 1965 into law. He would soon launch his War on Poverty to combat the rising poverty rates in the U.S. with his Great Society programs. He would also escalate the Vietnam War from a small force of training personnel to near complete mobilization of the U.S. military into a full armed conflict.

    Key Concept 8.1 The U.S. Military conducted a lottery of men born between 1964 to 1973. 2.2 million American men were chosen out of a total of 27 million were drafted. This was a result of the Gulf of Tonkin incident where supposedly the USS Maddox was shot by North Vietnamese guns while in neutral waters. This gave President Lyndon a plausible and seemingly just excuse to escalate the conflict in Vietnam.

LBJ also wanted to open up trade with southeast Asia.
