  • The American Revolution

    The American Revolution was the war in which the thirteen colonies fought for and obtained their independence from Great Britain. The war resulted from protests against unfair taxes on items such as tea.
  • George Washington's Farewell Address

    George Washington's Farewell Address was the speech the president gave when he left office. He gave advice and warned Americans about things like the danger of factions, and to stay away from foreign policy.
  • Isolationism

    Isolationism is a doctrine by people who believe that their country will be best if they avoid foreign affairs. Most isolationists believe that their country will stay out of dangerous or bad situations if they avoid the foreign conflicts.
  • Barbary Wars

    The Barbary Wars were two different wars fought over tribute that the Barbary pirates demanded from American merchant vessels in the Meditteranean Sea. The first war was fought from 1801 to 1805, and the second war was fought in 1815.
  • Embargo Act

    The Embargo Act was a law passed to attempt to end American foreign trade. The act ended up being hard for farmers and other Americans and was eventually ended 1809.
  • War of 1812

    The War of 1812 was a war fought between Great Britain and the U.S. because Great Britain began taking American ships by force. The war went on from 1812 until 1814.
  • Monroe Doctrine

    The Monroe Doctrine was a policy stating that European powers shouldn't be incvolved with/in the Americas. The doctrine was named after President James Monroe.
  • Manifest Destiny

    The Manifest Destiny was the belief that Americans should spread across the continent. They believed it was a destiny under God to do it.
  • U.S. Mexican War

    The Mexican-American War was a battle fought between 1946 and 1948 over Texas. After The conflict began after Texas won its independence from Mexico in 1821.
  • The Spanish-American-Cuban War

    The Spanish-American-Cuban War was fought over Cuba's independence. Cuba wasn't interested in living under Spain's rule any longer, so the United States declared war on Spain to protect Cuba's independence.
  • Annexation of Hawaii

    The Annexation Of Hawaii helped the United States to gain territory in the Pacific area. The United States were interested in Hawaii for a long time but didn't do anything until after President William McKinley won office in 1896.
  • Roosevelt Corollary

    The Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine was a corollary stated during President Theodore Roosevelt's State of the Union Address. It stated that the U.S. would interfere with conflicts between Europe and Latin America.
  • World War I

    World War I was the Great War fought from 1914 to 1918 when it was ended by the Treaty of Versailles. The initial cause was the assasination of Austria-Hungarian Archduke Franz Ferdinand by a Serbian man.
  • World War II

    World War II was a war fought between the Allies (United Kingdom, France, later the United States) and the Axis (Germany, Italy, Japan) that lasted from 1935 until 1945. It began when Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939.
  • The Cold War

    The Cold War is the name of the period of time in which political and military tension occured between the United States and the Soviet Union. It was called the "cold" war because no fighting ever really occured between the two sides.
  • Truman Doctrine

    The Truman Doctrine was a speech given by President Harry S. Truman to give support to Greece and Turkey in not falling under Soviet power. Many believe this was the start of the Cold War.
  • Marshall Plan

    The Marshall Plan was an effort to help European countries after World War II and prevent the spread of Sovet Communism. The plan lasted for four years.
  • Vietnam

    The Vietnam War was a war fought between North and South Vietnam from 1955 until 1975. It was fought over the issue of spreading communism and the U.S. trying to prevent the spread of communism.
  • Detente

    Detente means relaxation and the easing of tension between a political situation. This term can be used to describe the easing of the tension between the United States and the Soviet Union.
  • Carter's Emphasis on Foreign Policy

    President Jimmy Carter believed that America's policy should be based on morals. He wanted to make peace and "serve mankind."
  • Engagement

    Engagement is a term used to describe a policy of the Raegan Administration as alternative to economic sanctions in South Africa. It was influenced by the Cold War.
  • War in Iraq/Afghanistan/Global War on Terror

    The War in Iraq began when the United States invaded Iraq in 2003. The war in Afghanistan began in 2001 after the 9/11 attacks to take apart the al-Qaeda terrorist group. The Global War on Terror is the term used to describe the military campaign following the 9/11 attacks.
  • 9/11

    The September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks were launched by the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda. The attacks included hijacking four airplanes and crashing two into the twin towers, one into the Pentagon, and the last one was aimed for the White House but ended up in a field in Pennsylvania.
