Samuel Langley built a model of plane. He called it an Aerodrome. Langley's Aerodrome included a steam-powered engine. In 1891, his model flew for 3/4 of a mile then ran out of fuel. Langley than received a $50,000 grant to build a full-sized aerodrome. The Aerodrome ended up being too heavy and it crashed. Langley was very disappointed and gave up trying to fly.

Otto Lilienthal was a German engineer that studied aerodynamics and worked to design a glider that would fly. In 1891, Otto became the first person to design a glider that could fly a person and could fly long distances.

The brothers started their research in 1894 using a published copy of "Progress in Flying Machines". By 1902, the brothers had created a perfect glider shape and were ready to start work on a propulsion system. Then, on October 5, 1905, Wilbur Wright piloted the Flyer for 39 minutes. This event marks the day humankind was first able to fly.
