This is an important event in the history of education because public schools play a huge role in education still to this day. Currently, over ninety percent of schools in the United States are public schools.

    In 1892, the first Pledge of Allegiance was used in public schools, on Columbus Day. It is extremely important because students are still to this day required to recite it. There have been intense debates over whether or not it still fits in with the times and should still be recited due to religious issues.
