Fetal Development Timeline_Zoe McDermott

  • Period: to

    Month One

During the first month of pregnancy, at two weeks, the size of the unborn baby is the size of a pinhead. The egg attaches to the uterus and the brain and spinal cord are at the critical stage of development. The internal organs and the circulatory system begins to form and the heart begins to beat.
  • Period: to

    Month Two

During the second month, the size of the unborn child is approximately 1/4 inch (or 6 mm) as the month begins. The eyes, limbs, and ears begin to take shape and the bones begin to form.
  • Period: to

    Month Three

The child is now approximately 1 inch (or 25mm) long as the month begins. The nostrils, mouth, lips, and eyelids form and buds of 20 baby teeth appear. Fingers and toes are almost complete and all organs are present but still immature.
  • Period: to

    Month Four

As the month begins, the baby is about 3 inches (or 7.6cm) long and weighs one ounce (or 28g). The baby can suck thumb, swallow, hiccup, and move around. Facial features become more clear.
  • Period: to

    Month Five

The unborn child is now 6.5 - 7 inches (or 16 - 18cm) long and weighs about 4 - 5 ounces (or 113 - 142g) as the month begins. Hair, eyebrows, and eyelashes appear. The teeth continue to develop and organs are maturing. The child also becomes more active.
  • Period: to

    Month Six

The size of the baby is now 8 - 10 inches (or 21 - 25 cm) long and weighs about 8 - 12 ounces (or 227 - 340 g) as this month begins. The fat deposits under the child's skin and appears wrinkled. The child starts breathing movements.
  • Period: to

    Month Seven

The unborn baby is now approximately 10 - 12 inches (or 25 - 31 cm) long and weighs about 1.5 - 2 pounds (or 680 - 907 grams) as the month begins. The child has periods of activity followed by periods of quiet and rest.
  • Period: to

    Month Eight

The child is now 14 - 16 inches (or 36 - 41 centimeters) long and weighs about 2.5 - 3 pounds (or 1.0 - 1.4 kilograms) at the beginning of the month. It rapidly gains more weight and may react to loud noises with a reflex, jerking motion. It also moves into a head-down position.
  • Period: to

    Month Nine

As the month begins the baby is about 17 - 18 inches (or 43 - 46 centimeters) long and weighs about 5 - 6 pounds (or 2.3 - 2.7 kilograms). Weight gain continues and the skin becomes smooth as fat deposits continue. Movement decreases because the fetus does not have room to move around. The baby aquires disease-fighting antibodies from it's mother's blood. It then decesnds to pelvis, ready for birth.
