Fetal Development

By Ardi7S
  • Period: to

    LMP to Implantation

  • Period: to

    Embryonic Stage

  • Period: to

    End of Embryonic Stage

All of the babies cells have differentiated and complex structures like neurons all the way up to major organs like kidneys, heart, brain, lungs, etc. It is also during this time in which environmental factors can drastically affects the babies development such as drug and alcohol use. Extremities begin to form, the heart begins to beat and blood begins to flow as well.
  • Period: to

    Month 3

All organs and extremities are present and some are fully formed. As fetal development continues, these organs and extremities will continue to mature, and they will continue to mature after birth. The baby can close his/her fist and nails begin to grow. Teeth also begin to grow at this time. It is possible to determine the baby's sex at this time due to the fact that his/her reproductive system has formed.
  • Period: to

    Month 4

The baby's reproductive system has nearly finished developing, and now the sex can be determined somewhat easily with an ultrasound. Hair, eyelashes, and eyebrows grow and nails form. Bones become a little more dense and the nervous system functions more properly. This increase in nervous function allows the baby to stretch, yawn, and make facial expressions.
  • Period: to

    Month 5

Aside from more growth and development from preexisting structures, hair grows on the head a lanugo forms as well. The Vernix Caseosa also forms during this period. Around this time is when the baby begins to move which is called quickening.
  • Period: to

    Month 6

The baby develops the sense of hearing and can begin listening to outside sounds. Finger/toes prints form and blood vessels can be seen through the baby's redish translucent skin. The eyes also open around this time.
  • Period: to

    Month 7

The baby develops reserves of fat and responds more acutely to stimuli such as light, noise, and pain.
  • Period: to

    Month 8

Nearly all the major systems are functioning at 100% excluding the respiratory system. The brain develops very rapidly too.
  • Period: to

    Month 9

the baby should be fully matured and ready to be born around this time. The lungs should be developed enough to take in a breath of air shortly after delivery. The baby is ready to live as an independent being. The baby's reflexes, such as the grasping reflex and moro reflex should all be functioning as well.
