  • Articles of Confederation

    STATES
    The Articles of Confederation was the first try of somekind of government for the United States as a whole. It gave the federal government practically no power, yet it gave many rights to the states.
  • Constitutional Convention

    FEDERAL but could be argued for states
    The Covention met in order to revise the Articles of Confederation, but instead the ended up scraping it and creating a new form of government. The new form of government gave the federal government more rights, however, it gave states the right to make their own laws for their state that were not mentioned in the Constitution.
  • Supremecy Clause

    FEDERAL
    This clause made it so that the constitution is the supreme law of the land. Under any circumstance the constitutuion comes first.
  • Necessary and Proper clause

    FEDERAL
    This clause makes it so that congress can make any law that is necessary and proper. In order to carry out any powers that are stated in the constitution.
  • 10th Amendment

    STATES
    This amendment is part of the Bill of Rights and gave states the right to make their own laws that were not already given to the federal governement to make.
  • Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions

    STATES
    These resolutions declared that the alien and sedition acts were unconstitutional. From the resolutions declaring the acts unconstitutional it made a precedent that the states had the right and duty to declare a law they saw went against the constitution unconstitutional.
  • McCulloch V. Maryland

    FEDERAL
    The decision of this court case said that it was constitutional for congress to create a second National Bank. They did this through the Necessary and Proper clause that gives congress the power to pass laws that are not expressed in the Constituion.
  • Gibbons V. Ogden

    FEDERAL
    It was big case that held up the commerce clause that lets congress regulate interstate commerce. It also gave congress the power to regulate navigation .
  • Civil War

    FEDERAL
    This was the only was fought on American soil and the only one that we fought with ourselves. The Civil War was supposedly about States rights, but it was really about slavery. The south wanted to keep their slaves and the North wanted to abloish it all together.
  • 14th Amendment

    FEDERAL
    It declared all people born or naturalized in the United States a citizen.
  • Sherman Anti- Trust Act

    FEDERAL
    This act was the first federal act that made monoplistic companies illegal. Also, it was the first thing congress passed to prohibit trusts.
  • Plessy V. Ferguson

    STATE
    It upheld and said that it was constitutional for states to have racial segragation in public facilities.
  • 16th Amendment

    FEDERAL
    This Amendment gave the federal governemnt the right to raise a federal income tax. This would give the federal government more power because they can raise an army that was bigger than before.
  • Gitlow V. New York

    STATES?
    This court case was one of the selective incorporations, oe of the cases that extended the bill of rights to the states. This case imparticular extended the first amendmant rights to the states.
  • The New Deal

    FEDERAL
    The New Deal came at time when people were in need. It created many federal ABC agencies that we still have today. It was an attemt to get the United States out of the Great Deppression.
  • Brown V. Board of Education

    FEDERAL
    Overturned court case Plassy V. Ferguson that said,as long as it was seperate but equal, it was legal.. It declared state laws that sperated schools as black and white unconstitutional.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    FEDERAL
    This act made it illegal for a work place to discriminate against your because of your gender and race. This was a big deal at the time because if a spot was open a white man would get it before a more qualified black man bacause he was white. It's federal because it was a federal act that had to obeyed by all the states
  • Economic Opportunity Act of 1964

    FEDERAL
    This act authorized the formation of local action committies as a war on poverty. It was to eliminate poverty, expand education opprotunities and help the elderly. These committies are directly regulated by the federal government.
  • Election of Ronald Reagan

    STATES
    When Ronald Reagan was elected president, the country needed a change from the democrats that came beforehim. The democats that came before him made the federal government big. Being the republican that he was he did not like that and gave the states some of their rights back.
  • Americans with Disablities Act

    FEDERAL
    This was such a big act because it was the first civil rights law passed that delt with people with disabilities. It prohibited work places from not hiring them just because they were disabled.
  • United States V. Lopez

    STATES
    This court case set limits to congress's power under the commerce clause. It said that congress could not regulate commerce within the states, therfore, they could not regulate hand guns.
  • 104th Congess

    STATES
    The 104th congress was the first time the the Republicans had both houses since 1954. Since Republicans had both houses they had a better chance at passing the bills they wanted and because they are republicans they would devolve the federal government the best they could. This goes to the states because the republicans will work to give rights back to the states.
  • Printz V. United States

    FEDERAL
    Supreme Court ruling that established the unconstitutionality of certain interim provisions of the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act. It said that the government could not make states and local governments perform background checks on individuals who are going to buy guns.
  • Septermber 11, 2001

    FEDERAL
    This day was one of the most horriffic things that has been done on american soil since pearl harbor. Due to the terroist attacks that happend on this day the federal government grew and added new agaencies to look out for the well being of this country. For example, the Partiot Act, this act gave the federal government the power to perform wiretaps and many other things on people that they suspect of terroism.
  • Development of the Department of Homeland Security

    FEDERAL
    This agency was established because of the terroist attacks that happend on september 11, 2001. The government felt that it needed an agency that looked out for the saftey of the country and monitor what other countires are doing as well.
