  • Born in Lennep Germany

Wilhem Conrad Röntgen was born on March 27, 1845. His parent's were Friedrich Conrad Röntgen, who was a merchant, and Charlotte Constanze Frowein. He was born in Lennep Germany in the Lower Rhine Province.
  • Attended the Institute of Martinus Herman van Doorn

His family moved to Appledoorn in the Neatherlands which is where he attended the Institue of Martinus Herman van Doorn, which was a boarding school.
  • Attended The Utrecht Technical School

  • Wilhelm is expelled

Röntgen is expelled from the Utrecht Technical School in 1863 when he was framed for a prank that was committed by another student.
  • entered the University of Utrecht

In 1865 Wilhelm entered the University of Utrecht without the necessary credentials to actually attend. He began his studies in physics.
  • Earned a Ph.D in Mechanical Science

Wilhelm earned his Ph.D from the University. While earning his degree, he also worked for August Kundt in his laboratory.

    Röntgen works as Kundt's assistant

Wilhelm worked as an assitant for August Kundt and went to work with him at a few different locations.
  • Röntgen's first work

Wilhelm's first work was published in 1870. It dealt with the specific heats of gases.
  • married Anna Bertha Ludwig of Zürich

After meeting her in a cafe' and spending time together, they were married in Apeldoorn.
  • Became a lecturer at Strasbourg University

  • appointed Professor at Hohenheim in Württemberg.

He was appointed Professor in the Academy of Agriculture at Hohenheim in Württemberg.
  • returned to Strasbourg.

he returned to Strasbourg as Professor of Physics.
  • Accepted an invitation by the University of Giessen.

He was given the position of Chair of Physics.
  • accepts invitation from the University of Würzburg .

Wilhelm declined similar offers from two other colleges before accepting the invitation from the University of Würzburg. (He declined offers from the University of Jena in 1886 and the University of Utrecht in 1888).
  • The first "Reontgenogram"

Wilhelm realized that objects with different thickness had different transparency when recorded on an imaging plate. He experimented by taking an image of his wife's hand. This is considered to be the first X-ray image or "Reontgenogram"
  • Discovered the X-ray.

While Wilhelm was experimenting with the cathode ray, he made an accidental discovery. he put a piece of cardboard covered with fluorescent mineral near the experimental set and noticed it was glowing when the source of the rays were turned on. By experimenting with the vacuum tube covered up by black carboard in a dark room, he was able to observe a bright glow during each discharge on a screen covered with fluorescent barium platinum cyanide. He called the agent causing this reaction X-rays.
  • Recieved The Nobel Prize in Physics

Recieved The Nobel Prize in Physics for his discovery of the X-ray.
  • The Father of the X-ray dies.

Wilhelm died on Feburary 10, 1923 from carcinoma of the intestines.
