    Lester is wearing an orange coat when he gets beat up in the first episode. This is the inciting incident which leads to him meeting Malvo and killing his wife. His orange coat symbolizes his victimhood and his illumination, and will continue to symbolize this through the rest of the show.

    Lester wears a suit when being questioned by the police and attempting to appear innocent. The dark colors of his suit, however, represent that he truly is not innocent, which one of the police officers realizes.

    Gus wears a gray/red plaid shirt when he talks to his daughter and tries to figure out when it's best to do what's right and when one should protect their family. The red is his love for Greta and the gray is the guilt he feels for letting Malvo go.

    At this point in the show, Lester is still hanging on to much of his old submissive personality. This shows through his subdued, beige clothing.

    Gus tries to fix his mistake by telling his boss, but he is reprimanded and told to go to Bemidji's police station. He wears his light blue uniform during this and while having dinner with Molly and Greta. In this context, the blue represents softness, truth, integrity, and honor.

    Gus wears black when he arrests Malvo, but Malvo fools everyone and is released from custody. He confronts death (Malvo), which the black represents.
