Thomas Carlyle (Ecclefechan, Scotland, December 4, 1795-London, February 5, 1881) was a Scottish philosopher, historian, translator, mathematician, social critic and essayist. He was Professor and then Chancellor of the University of Edinburgh. In his book On Heroes, Hero-Worship, and The Heroic in History ("On Heroes, Hero Worship, and the Heroic in History").
