    This was a campaign conducted by The German Student Union to ceremonially burn books. The main books that were being targeted were those that were viewed as being subversive or representing ideologies opposed to Nazism.

    This bombing happened during the final stage of WWII, the United States dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. They killed at least 129,000 people. This was the first incident involving atomic bombs.

    The Cold war lasted from 1947-1991. The war was a state of political and military tension after WWII between powers in the Western Bloc (The United States, its NATO allies and others) and powers in the Eastern Bloc (The Soviet Union and its allies in the Warsaw Pact). It was termed as "cold" because there was no actual large-scale fighting directly between the two sides.

    The Allied powers of the United States, Soviet Union, UK, and France negotiated details of peace treaties with Italy, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, and FInland. This treaty allowed them to continue with their responsibilities as sovereign states in international affairs and the qualify for membership in the United Nations. Also, it was the end of World War II.

    This was the first blacklist in Hollywood, but this lasted until the 60's. The blacklist was generally known as the mid 20th century practice of denying employment to screenwriters, actors, directors, musicians, and other U.S. entertainment professionals because of their suspected political beliefs.

    Hiss Affair
    Hiss was accused of being a Soviet spy and he was convicted of prejury in connection with this charge in 1950. Chambers, was subpoena before the HUAC that Hiss had secretly been a Communist, though not a spy, while in federal serive. Hiss denied it and Chambers kept repeated his cliam anad Hiss filed a lawsuit against Chambers.

    Loyalty Oath Controversy at University of California
    During the Cold War, The Board of Regents of The University of California imposed a requirement that all University employees sign an oath affirming not only loyalty to the state constituion, but a denial of membership or belief in organizations (including Communist organizations) advocating overthrow of the United States Goverment. Thousands signed just so they wouldn't lose their job, but there were few who didn't, and whom then got fired.

    This was lasted until July 27th 1953. It was a war between North and South Korea, in which a United Nations force led by the United Sates of America fought for the South, and China fought for the North, which was also assisted by the Soviet Union.

    Levitt and sons built 6 models of house in Levittown. The construction started in February 1952. This was called the second Levittown built by William J. Levitt, who is iften credited the creator of modern American suburbs.

    This was when the first color television sets were first sold. It was a 15 inch screen. Later that year they were 19 inch screens. By 1955, all were 21 inch screens. But, the public really didn't start buying color tvs more until the 1960's.

    This is a landmark United States Supreme Court case in which the Court declared state laws establishing seperate public schools for black and white students to be unconstitutional.

    This was a series of hearings of investigating the United Sates Army, which he charges with being "soft" on communism. These televised hearings gave the American public their first view of McCarthy in action, and his recklessness, indignant bluster, and bullying tacticts quickly resulted in his fall from prominence.

    Comic book bans
    Comic books bans started in the 1950's and continued on through the 21st. century. They were banning comic books due to the public concern of the gory and horrific comic book content. They actually started the Comics Magazine Association of America for this response.
