    Otto Hanh a German physicist discovered how to spilt the uranium atom which sparked investigation of nuclear fussion. In 1942, the War Department's Army Corps of Engineers took control to develop the bomb. There was a successful attempt in New Mexico. This bomb has only been dropped twice; Hiroshima and Nagasaki located both in Japan.

    The Board of Regents of the University of California required that all employees sign an oath affirming loyalty to the state constitution and a denial of beliefs in organizations that wanted to overthrow the United States. 31 professors and scholars who didn't sign were dismissed.

    Alger Hiss, former State Department offical, was accused of being a Soviet spy during and after World War II by another former Communist, Whiittaker Chambers. He was convicted of perjury for lying about passing government documents to Chambers.

    Senator Joseph McCarthy charged that over 200 "known communists" were in the Department of State. McCarthy manipulated the media, told outrageous stories concering the communists and smeared any opponent as "communist sympathizers." The Senator next charged that the United States Army was "soft" on communism. The hearings were not any better; McCarthy interrupted with non related questions and verbally attacked witnesses, attorneys and other senators.
