  • Justin Smith Morrill/Morrill Act of 1862

    Justin Smith Morrill was a Representative from Vermont who introduced the bill, which was signed by President Lincoln. This bill gave colleges funding from the sale of federal land. Education, Transportation and Homesteading Acts were signed to boost post Civil War life.

    W.O. Atwater
    Atwater studied metabolism and developed a system to measure energy intake to energy output. The beginning of sports nutrition.
  • New England Kitchen

    New England Kitchen
    Ellen Richards began the New England Kitchen in Boston Mass. offering families lost-cost, nutritious meals.
  • The Rumford Kitchen

    The Rumford Kitchen
    At the Worlds Fair in Chicago, Ellen Richards provided meals prepared in a demonstration kitchen with nutrient values listed on the menus for every item. Posters were hung all around displaying nutritional information.

    A law that funded teacher training for vocations, such as: agriculture, technology, business and Family and Consumer Science. Schools could provide an applicable education and the number of students attending and graduating from high school increased.
