    First to label nutrition as a science in the late 1800’s Invented the first range with temperature controls Thompson was an active and prolific inventor, developing improvements for chimneys, fireplaces and industrial furnaces, as well as inventing the double boiler, a kitchen range, and a drip coffeepot.

    Morrill Act of 1862

    Named for its sponsor, Vermont Congressman Justin Smith Morrill
    Provided grants of land to states to finance the establishments of colleges
    Each state got 30,000 acres for each of its congressional seat
    Made it possible for new western states to establish colleges for their citizens

    Lake Placid Conference

    During this time, science helped to drive forward education on bacteria and begin examining everything under a microscope. While some educators, like Alice Ravenhill in BC started out with work in hygiene, the Lake Placid Conference helped her to realize she preferred the term home economics for her type of education.
  • Smith Lever Act

    Smith Lever Act

    was the culmination of five years of debate over how agricultural extension work should be organized. The Smith-Lever Act established a national Cooperative Extension Service that extended outreach programs through land-grant universities to educate rural Americans about advances in agricultural practices and technology.
  • Smith Hughes Act

    Formally known as National Vocational Education Act Provided federal aid to the states for the purpose of promoting pre collegiate vocational education in home economics Allowed students to get hands on educational materials focused on preparing them for vocations. the Smith-Hughes Act, enacted in 1917 and named after its sponsors, Rep. D. Hughes

    In 1939, it restricts federal employee participation in certain partisan political activities.
    The act was initially passed in reaction to a scandal during the administration of Franklin D Roosevelt.
  • Vocational Education Act

    Vocational Education Act

    Created support for work study programs and research The first vocational education bill was passed in 1903 to provide manual training and agriculture courses
  • Vocational Amendment of 1968

    The first vocational legislation to officially reference postsecondary students. It extended set-aside funding for students from specific populations. Equal opportunities for women and girls
  • Vocational Amendment of 1973

    prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in programs conducted by federal agencies, in programs receiving federal financial assistance, in federal employment and in the employment practices of federal contractors.
  • Vocational Amendment of 1976

    Required states receiving federal funding for vocational education to develop and carry out activities and programs to eliminate gender bias, stereotyping, and discrimination in vocational education.
  • Carl Perkins Act

    Carl Perkins Act

    Authorizes federal funds to support vocational education programs. One of the goals for the Perkins Act is to improve the access of either those who have been underserved in the past or those who have greater-than-average educational needs.
