On this day in history, Abner Doubleday is said to invent the gam of baseball. This took place in Cooperstown, New York. Little did he know it would be one of the most popular sports in the future.

Baseball was one of the first sports played in America, at the time it was only played by men and was meant to be a "gentleman's game". The game was played between the New York Knickerbockers, and New York Nine.

The first women baseball team was at Vassar college. The AAGBPL was the first recorded womens baseball league, but women had been playing baseball since the 19th century.

The first curveball ever thrown was in 1867 by Candy Cummings, it now is one of the most elite pitches in the game of baseball. It eventually developed into a slider and "ifus" pitch.

In 1876 the national baseball league is established, this would help grow the sport of baseball. It also gave a lot more people jobs due to the need for maintenance at fields.

In 1884 the first African american baseball player took the fields in the major leagues his name was Moses Fleetwood Walker. This would inspire other African Americans, like Jackie Robinson.

In 1889 the players league is created. It was very popular for a couple years, before it completely fell off. The league does not exist today.
