Events that led to the American Revolution

  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    The stamp act was when the government imposed a tax on documents and printed items such as wills, newspapers, and playing cards. Colonists harassed stamp distributers, boycott British goods, and prepare a declaration of rights.
  • Townshend Act

    Townshend Act
    Britain taxed certain colonial imports and stations troops at major colonial ports to protect customs officers. Colonists protest "taxation without representation" and organizes a new boycott of imported goods.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    British troops were taunted by an angry mob and killed 5 colonists within the crowd. The colonial agitators label this a massacre and published a dramatic engraving deticting the violence.
  • Tea Act

    It was a trick that British parliament pulled on the Americans to monopolize the Tea industry in the latter part of the 18th Century in order to make more profits. The Americans boycotted.
  • Boston Tea Party

    A group of Boston rebels disguised themselves as Native Americans and proceeded to take action against 3 British tea ships due to their anger towards the tax on tea. (tea act)

    A war between two ambitious empires; the French vs. Great Britain. Both countries wanted to establish a stronger power in the 'New World'. Native American Indians allied with the British in the conflict. This was also known as the Seven Years War.

    King George the third tightens control over massachusetts by closing the Boston Harbor and quartering troops. Colonial leaders then forms the first continental congress.

    The battles at Lexington and Concord were the first interactions of the militaries in the Revolutionary War. The Americans were fighting for independence from Great Britain and for the fight against tax,
  • Publishing of the Common Sense

    Publishing of the Common Sense
    Thomas Paine a native Brit, found himself in the middle of all these hectic political events and then published Common Sense which was the first pamphlet to call for American independence from Britain. This was considered to be one of the most influential political texts in history. Paine strongly encouraged independence from Great Britain due to their wrong doings of the monarchy that directly effected the colonists.
  • 2nd Continental Congress

    2nd Continental Congress
    The Second Continental Congress established the militia as the Continental Army to represent the thirteen states. They also elected George Washington as Commander in Chief of the Continental Army.
