Events Leading up to the Declaration of Independence

  • Albany Plan

    Albany Plan
    The Albany Plan was a plan to create a unified government for the Thirteen colonies suggested by Benjamin Franklin .Was the first important proposal to conceive of the colonists as a collected whole united under one government.
  • The Stamp Act

     The Stamp Act
    Tax introduced on legal documents to pay for defense of colonies. Americans boycotted British good because they were angry. Tax collectors like Andrew Oliver were threatened by death to leave their jobs and protest The Stamp Act. It was repealed in 1766.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    A small riot between British soldiers and American colonists in Boston. There was a lot of fighting before the massacre occurred, so the British sent in some troops to keep order in Boston. The colonist began insulting, and shouting at the soldiers which made them angry and caused them to shoot into the crowd killing 5 colonist.
  • Boston Tea Party

    Boston Tea Party
    Boston patriots organized the Boston Tea party as a way to protest the Tea Act.On the night of December 16th 1773 colonials disguised as Indians, boarded the ships and threw tea overboard. The outcome for Boston was that the Parliament put the intolerable acts in place.
  • Intolerable Acts

    Intolerable Acts
    A series of acts set up by Parliament to punish Massachusetts for protesting against the British.The 3 laws of the intolerable acts were 1.) the Boston Harbor was closed until all tea was paid off
    2.) The government of Massachusetts was under strict British control.
    3.) British troops accused of murder would be tried in England and not the colonies.
    The other colonies sent food and money to the Bostonians so they wouldn't starve.
  • The First Continental Congress

    The First Continental Congress
    The delegates from the First Continental Congress debated on how to deal with Britain. Some wanted to end the conflict by using violence, and others wanted peace. The delegates compromised and decided that they would continue the boycott and warn militias to be ready.
  • Start and End of the American Revolution

    Start and End of the American Revolution
    The war between Great Britain and its American colonies, y which the colonies won their independence. Some of the causes of this war was the Proclamation Act of 1763, Intolerable Acts, Stamp Act, lack of representation in parliament, and British economic policies following the French and Indian War. The war finally ended September 3rd 1783, and it helped spark the French Revolution.

    " The shot heard around the world". These battles initiated the Revolutionary War between the American colonists and the British. The outcome of the battle was because the colonists wanted a self-government.

    The Second Continental Congress managed the Colonial war effort, and moved towards independence by adopting the Declaration of independence. The Second Continental Congress created the Continental Army, authorized the printing of colonial money, and dealt with foreign affairs.

    The Declaration of Independence is a document that declared independence from Britain and the formation of a new country. Mainly summarized the natural rights of people, the British wrongs, and declaring independence from Britain.
