Events Leading to Freedom

  • Stamp Act

    The Stamp Act was passed by English Parliament in 1765. This act imposed a new tax on all American colonists, and required them to pay tax on all paper they used.
  • Boston Tea Party

    The Sons of Liberty boarded three ships and threw 342 chests of tea, belonging to the British East Indian Company. The Americans were protesting the tax on tea the British had imposed without contentment.
  • Ride of Paul Revere and WIlliams Dawes

    Paul Revere and William Dawes rode from Boston to Lexington to warn Samuel Adams and John Hancock the British troops where headed to arrest them.
  • "The Shot Heard Around the World"

    The first gunshot in the American Revolution. This event marked the beginning of a war that would lead to freedom.
  • Declaration of Independence

    July 4th, 1776 American colonists adopted the declaration of Independence. It was used to declare the 13 colonies free from the British government. It also talked about the human rights that can not be taken away by any government.
  • Articles of Confederation

    Was an agreement between the original 13 colonies, served as the first American Constitution. They also lead the framework for the Federal government.
  • General Cornwallis Surrenders

    In the battle of Yorktown General Cornwallis surrendered his troops to George Washington. French and American forces trapped the British, making them surrender. This surrender marked the end of the American Revolution.
  • Constitution is Adopted

    After coming together to ratify the Article of Confederation they adopted the Constitution. A document that established America's national government and fundamental laws. This document also guarantees certain basic rights to all citizens.
  • Bill of Rights is adopted

    Bill of Rights made up of the first ten amendments to the Constitution. After various states called for a greater constitutional protection for individual liberties, James Madison wrote the Bill of Rights. The Bill of Rights limits government power on specific individual rights.
