  • Goodbye with Mr. Spencer

    Goodbye with Mr. Spencer
    Before Holden leaves Pencry Prep, he stops by his history teacher, Mr. Spencer's, house to say goodbye. There, Mr. Spencer cautions Holden to start playing life by the rules and to think sincerely about his future. While Mr. Spencer is old and sick, Holden is young and has his whole life ahead of him, and "getting the ax" from Pencey is not a stop on the path to success. Mr. Spencer reflects his liking of Holden, but informs Holden that it is his own fault that he had to fail him in History.
  • Parting with Stradlater and Ackley

    Parting with Stradlater and Ackley
    Holden's says goodbye to his two "friends", Stradlater and Ackley before he leaves Pencey, and he does so in unique ways: When Holden sees Stradlater for the last time, he gets in a physical fight with him over his date with Jane. Holden cant control his frustration and instead of talking about it, he hits Stradlater. After he leaves the figth, he wakes Ackley up and awkward does his version of a goodbye. As Holden leaves Pencey that night, he yells to the hall, "Sleep tight ya morons!"

    Encounter with Nuns
    Holden runs into two nuns who are on their way to Manhattan to teach school. Despite his lack of interest in school and dislike for religion, he converses with them and feels obliged to give them money. He is able to talk to them about Romeo and Juliet, but his differing of opinions represents his inability to communicate with the adult phonies in the world.
  • Date with Sally Hayes

    Date with Sally Hayes
    Out of boredom, Holden calls Sally and schedule a date with her to see a movie and go ice skating. In the cab, he makes out with her, but never expresses any particular liking for her. She agitates him, shutting down his desires and eventually he yells at her and calls her a "royal pain in the ass," upsetting her like he has many other people.
  • Lavendar Room at the Edmont Club

    Lavendar Room at the Edmont Club
    After Holden arrives in NYC, he heads over to the Edmont Club to drink and listen to the live music. He tries to order a drink, but the server's are not fooled by his demeanor and only offer him a Coke. Holden eyes three women at the other table and eventaully gets the blond woman to dance with him. Though she and her friends are not intellectually stimulating, Holden buys their drinks and sits with them to they leave. Here, Holden attempts to interact with women.
