    The heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, Archduke Franz Ferdinand is assassinated in Bosnia by a Serb nationalist. This causes Astro-Hungary to declare war on Serbia. This is important because this event is a direct cause of World War I and many other countries join the war.

    Britain and France wanted to capture the Gallipoli Peninsula and eventually Constantinople to defeat the Ottoman Empire, however, they lost badly. It was important because it showed that the Ottoman Empire still had a lit bit of power.

    The Bolshevik Revolution was led by Vladimir Ilyich Lenin and a group of Russian socialists. It was significant because the tsar was overthrown and a communist government was created.

    This was a treaty signed between the New Bolshevik Government of Russia and the Central Powers. It was important because it ended Russian participation in World War I.
  • Ataturk proclaims Republic of Turkey

    Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, a military hero who fought Britian, France, and Greece for Turkey's independence, creates the Republic of Turkey. This is iportant because he makes a lot of reforms and modernizes Turkey.

    In 1929, the stock market crashed, and it was the most devastating stock market crash in the United States. It was important because it led to the Great Depression and affected many other countries.

    Hitler, a fascist dictator, became ruler in Germany in 1934. He was important because he ruled Germany with an Iron Fist anf was one of the main causes for World War II.
  • Invasion of Poland by Germany

    On Sep 1, 1939, Nazi Germany forces invaded neighboring Poland. This invasion was important because it signalled the beginning of World War II, and the Allies declared war on Germany.
  • D-Day invasion at Normandy

    Allied troops began landing in Normandy, France. The invasion was an airborne assault. It was important because the Allies were able to defeat the Germans and the war in Europe was over.
  • Establishment of the United nations

    The United Nations is an intergovernmental organization that promotes international co-operation and peace. It replaced the League of Nations after World War II. It's important because it's still around today.
  • Atomic Bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

    The United States bombed the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This bombing signalled japanese surrender and victory of America in the Pacific. also, World War II ended.

    The state of Israel was created by the United Nations as a homeland for the Jews. The Jews and the Palestinians were given land. However, the creation of Israel was met with opposition by most Arab countries.

    Apartheid was a system of racial segregation in South Africa enforced by the National Party. Afrikaner minority rule was maintained. It was significant because it sparked internal resistance and violence, and a trade and arms embargo on South Africa. Eventually, the black majority gained independence.
