    Peace of Augsburg

    The Peace of Augsburg was a treaty between both Charles V and the Schmalkaldic League. The treaty officially ended religious struggle between both groups and created the legal division of Christianity permanent. Also during this time, you could only have one type of religion in each town. So if you didn't want to be apart of that religion then you would have to move to a different town.

    French Wars of Religion

    The French Wars of Religion was an extended period of war between Catholics and Huguenots which are Calvinist Protestants and the fighting took place in the Kingdom of France. This event occurred because of conflict between Protestants and Catholics and both sides received help from foreign sources. Also during the French Wars millions of people died.

    Bartholomew’s Day Massacre

    Bartholomew’s Day Massacre took place in Paris and was plotted by Catherine de Medici. It was one event and was carried out by Roman Catholic nobles and other citizens. The Massacre marked the resumption of religious civil war in France.

    The Edict of Nantes was signed by King Henry IV of France and it granted the Calvinist Protestants substantial rights in the nation. The Edict did many things such as allowed Protestants to hold public worship, granted them full civil rights, and established a special court. Also Henry´s main goal in the Edict was to promote civil unity.

    The 30 Years War was religious conflict that was mainly fought in central Europe. This war started off as a battle and by the end, it had formed the Holy Roman Empire. Millions of people died during this event and some things resulting from it are Germany becoming more divided and wars of religion ending.

    Treaty of Westphalia

    The Treaty of Westphalia is a name for two peace treaties that were signed in October of 1648. The purpose of the Treaty is to recognize the full territorial sovereignty of the member states of the empire. The Treaty of Westphalia also ended the Thirty Years War and stated that all German states should determine their own religion.
