The first legal basis for the coexistence of Lutheranism and Catholicism in Germany by protecting religious freedoms. It allowed the state princes to choose between Lutheranism or Catholicism as the religion of their domain, and those who didn't want to abide by the regions new religion, would be aloud to leave. It officially ended the conflict between the two groups, but didn't protect other Protestant denominations, like Calvinism. It also made it harder for Germany to unite as a nation.

The 30 years war was originally a religious civil war between the Protestants and Roman Catholics in Germany. But quickly turned into a series of wars fought over religious, dynastic, territorial, and commercial rivalries. Turning into a struggle for power in Europe, ending with the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648, the map of Europe had been irrevocably changed.
