    Columbus lands in the New World

    Columbus lands in the New World
    Columbus lands on a island near the Bahamas which he names San Salvador. He was trying to find a way to the Indies. Immediatly he was greeted by the Natives on the beach.

    The Spanish Empire

    The Spanish Empire
    Due to Christopher Columbus claiming land in America Spain had lots of land. They then established an Empire on all of this land. They controlled most of Mexico and a large area in both North and South America.

    African Slave Trade
    The African Slave trade began because after the Natives had been enslaved and had died from the work the Spanish needed new people to work there farms. They decided to bring Africans on large diseased ships to the New World to be there slaves.

    Sir. Walter formed a colony called Roanoke but supplies were very scarce. After a few years there was no longer a trace of life at the colony of Roanoke.

    Jamestown: The First English Colony
    In 1607 Jamestown was founded by a group of gentlemen and craftsman that were sent to the New World by a company. However they settled in a bad spot and began to die of disease and hunger. Later on England sent Captain John Smith and farmers to help reinforce Jamestown and to start getting order and produce food.

    In 1608 New France was founded by Samuel de Chamlain. It was a base for fur trappers, soldiers, missionaries, traders, and explorers. Here unlike the Spanish they made friends with the Natives and they were business partners. They claimed a large area to the North. The weather was very harsh and so not many farmers came to New France

    New Netherland
    In 1609 Henry Hudson sailed to the Americas and went up a deep river full of fish thinking it might take him across the continent. However it didnt but he named the shore of the river New Netherland. Ultimatly even though many more people came it failed and they were driven from the New World by people like the English or the Natives.

    When the English came to the New World they brought gentlemen and craftsmen. They could not farm and the Natives would not trade with them so they ran out of food. Then they began to die. Also they were plauged by mosquitos and they constinty were dieing,

    The Proclamation of 1763 declared that settlers of America most stay east of the Appalachian mountains due to the fact that after the French Indian war Britian was weak and the British needed to keep settlers and native americans from killing eachother as the settlers moved westward in search of new land.

    The Stamp Act
    The British Government was poor after the French Indian War and to make up for these losses in funding they decided to tax the settlers in America who were taxed much less than people living in Europe. The Stamp act declared that for each paper good, from writing paper to playing cards, they must buy a stamp. This was a way to earn money whenever someone would by paper.

    The Quartering Act declared that all people living in the colonies must provide housing, candles, firing, bedding, cooking utensils, salt, vinegar, and beer. The settlers were outraged and even said that they would not provide some of these materials for the british soldiers. They also didn't want to pay to keep troops in there country that did nothing what so ever and took up lots of space.

    The Townshend act declared that a tax must be payed on british goods that the colonies imported such as glass, paint, paper, and tea. The colinies however retaliated by not letting the taxes effect them. They began boycotting the British goods and would not buy them. This way the British began losing money and they soon repealed the Townshend Act.

    The Tea Act declared that the people in the colinies may only buy tea from Englands East India Trading Company. The company had been a huge moneymaker for England and was about to go bankrupt due to the boycott of English tea. Britain lowered the price of tea and began trying to sell it. However the colinists just saw this as a way to tax them without consent and therefor wouldn't buy the tea. They protested at the docks and wouldn't let the tea be unloaded.     The Intolerable Acts
    The Intolerable Acts were designed to punsih the colonists for the Boston Tea Party. They declared that the harbor would be closed till the tea was payed for, The governement became under british control and lastly british soldiers who were accused of murder would be tried in Britian. Also more troops were sent to the colonies. This however did the oppisite of what was intended. It strengthend and united the colinies. They sent food to Boston to keep them alive and began boycotting again.

    Lexington and Concord was britains first military strike against the colonists. There spies told them that the colonists were holding gunpowder and weapons and so they attacked to try and obtain these weapons and powder because they thought the colonists would use it to attack them.

    The Olive Branch Petition was a letter the Second Continental Congress sent to King George telling them what was wrong and that they needed it fixed. It was also used to negotiate peace between Britain and the colinies. However King George refused there proprosal.

    In 1775 the Second Continental Congress met. They met to decide what to do about hostilitys against Britain. John Adams proposed to create an army and have George Washington lead it.

    Miltiamen near boston fortified two hills near boston called Bunker Hill and Breeds Hill. These forts worried the British and they attacked. The patriots however held them off twice before they finally took the hills with 1000 of there men dead.
  • The Seige of Boston

    The Seige of Boston
    Washington took control of his continental army. He gathered powder, ammunition, and weapons. Aswell he stole cannons from the British. He then took his army to Boston where they surrounded the city. When the British saw there own cannons and all the militiamen surrounding the city they fled immediatly.

    The Second Contintal congress agrred on a final draft of the Declaration. They then all signed the document making it complete and final declaring Americas independece from Britain.
  • Battle for New York

    Battle for New York
    The Battle of New York was a tactical move by the British. They wished to capture New York and then advance crushing the rebellion at the heart in Massachussuts, The Americans fought with high spirits but were no match for the well trained british army men. The British defeated them and chased the Army out of New York and through New Jersey and finally into Pennslyvania. This was a bad time for the Continental Army.

    The Battle in Trenton was a great victory for the americans. They rode boats over the Delaware River and attacked the British on a holiday when they didn't expect they would ever be attacked. They were alseep after there feast and they were caught unaware. They won the battle and took over.

    After declaring independence in 1776 congress needed a system of government. However they were scared that a strong central government would create another version of what they had just finished fighting against so they created the Articles of Confederation which gave power to the states instead of a central government

    The Battle at Saratoga springs was another victory for the Americans. The Americans had tired there troops out and even though they outnumbered the British the British still attacked! They were defeated and a battle was won.
  • Yorktown

    Yorktown
    The Battle in Yorkdown was a huge victory for the Americans. 8000 french troops and 29 warships arrived. Washington moved his men together with them and combined they had 16,000 men. They surrounded British occupied Yorktown and the warships blocked off the bay. The British surrendered after a long period of fighting.

    Representitives of both America and Britain signed a peace treaty in Paris. This made Britain recognize them as independent and that the war would be over between them.

    In 1787 a group of farmers lead by Daniel Shays began protesting and fighting against the government because they were being forced to pay back debts that they could no longer pay now that the war was over.

    After Shays rebellion a revising of the Constituion was ordered. Delegates from across america met in Independance hall to discuss what they would do about the government. Would they change it and write a new constituion or just revise the Articles of Confederation

    They required 9 of 13 votes to pass the constition. They however achieved these 9 votes and the new constitution came into play in the american government

    Lousiana a big pice of land in the middle of the U.S was owned by france who wished to use it to have settlers farm and raise crops. However france was on the brink of war with spain so instead of letting spain win it over the Americans bought it for 15 million $.

    Spain gives  Florida to the U.S.
    In 1819 Andrew Jackson attacked Florida and captured most of it. However his illegal attack angered spain and they threatened war. Both Spain and America didn't want war so Spain agreed to leave with America paying $5 million to spain as an apology.

    They needed to get new land for settlers. However the land was already occupied by the Native Americans. The goverment therefor started the Indian Removal Act were all indians would move to a certain piece of land to make room for white settlers

    The Trail of Tears was a long path the Natives had to travel as they abandoned there homes and had to move to the small piece of land they were given. Many died along the way and it was a very bad time

    In 1844 after the battle of Alamo and many other hostilities in texas the U.S finally one. They decided they would annex texas from Mexico and a year later it was admitted as the 28th state.
  • Oregon Country

    Oregon was claimed by both Britain and the U.S. The U.S wanted the entire of Oregon however they couldnt just take it without risking war with britain. They compromised with a treaty that split Oregon roughly in half the southern half for the U.S and the northern for Britain.
  • War with Mexico

    The U.S still wanted more land and they set there sights on California and New Mexico. However Mexico refused to talk to them. In a recent event mexicans had shot US troops in Texas and so the U.S went to war with Mexico. They won the war and took Texas, California, and New Mexico.

    The power of the senate meant that bills would not pass through congress. As long as there were more slave states or equal slave states to the number of free states, the free states could not pass bills that could end slavery completely in the United States.

    If there were more free states than slave states it would give the free states more power in congress. This would allow the free states to pass bills eliminating slavery and ruining southern economy

    This act upset the Northerners because it meant that people in the states would choose what kind of state to become. Because this was happening it would allow slavery to spread easily throughout the United States

    When Abe was elected president the south was afraid because he apposed slavery. This could mean that he might try hard to eliminate slavery and so the southerners were opposed to his presidency.

    In 1861 confederate forces fired on Fort Sumter. This was the begging of the civil war. The civil was started because the north and south could not agree on ideas such as slavery in the United states so the confederate states trade to break the union. However President Lincoln couldn't allow it to happen because it might allow other states to leave whenever they wanted. The south had reall amazing generals however they lost the war in 1865.
