The Soviet Union ratified a treaty with the United States and Britain, which banned nuclear weapons from outer space. It barred nations from appropriating celestial bodies, but it did not mention individuals.

During a protest march in supposrt of sanitation workers on strike in Memphis, riots erupted between the marchers and National Guard troops. Martin Luther King, the leader of the marches, left Memphis, but promised to return on April 4th.

Astronaut Neil Armstrong takes his legendary "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind" after he touches down on the surface of the moon. The crew of Apollo 11 explored the moon for 2 1/2 hours.

Former US-employed assistant and lover to marshal Col. John E. Baird, was arrested by South Korean police. He was among thousands of leftists rounded up by President Syngman Rhee. She was soon after tried and executed by South Korea as an alleged spy.

In Londonderry, Northern Ireland, British troops fired on a civil rights march. 13-14 people were killed by soldiers in the First Parachute Regiment, six of whom were only 17 years old.

Khalid Dunham Al-Jawary, and possibly others, readied cars with bombs in an attempt to take out Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir. The bombs didn't go off, however, and were discovered after the cars were towed.
