Esther's Vergeer Life story
Esther developed paraplegia when she was 8 years old, after risky surgeryon blood vessels around her spinal cord. -
She turned professional in tennis 1995. She is a right handed player.

Esther was invited to join a national wheelchair basketball team. She played with the Dutch team that won the European championship in 1997.

At the US Open Championships in 1998, her success which took her from 15th to 2nd in the world, led to her photo in the Tennis Week issue on the 26th of November 1998.

Esther Vergeer has been world number one wheelchair tennis player since 1999. Her ranking still stands to this day.
