Erikson Timeline

  • Adolescence

    Adolescence
    Bob is a 16 year old high school junior. He just got his first job at as a bagger at the local grocery store. He realizes that he is capable of making money on his own, and is saving up for a car. In Erikson's fifth stage, identity versus confusion, young people become aware of who they are and their capacities.
  • Early Adulthood

    Bob is 26 and is getting married to his longtime girlfriend, Karla. He is taking a risk and entering into a committed relationship. He has entered Erikson's sixth stage, intimacy versus isolation. Bob is choosing an intimate relationship.
  • Middle Adulthood

    Middle Adulthood
    Bob is 46 years old and is working hard on building up his college savings for his twin girls. He is also putting aside money for their future weddings. This is the seventh stage, middle adulthood, where Erikson claims a person becomes focused on the next generation. There is a greater focus on providing for and helping others.
  • Late Adulthood

    At 76, Bob is in the final stages of cancer. He is proud of his achievements, particularly raising two succussful daughters. He is content with his life. Bob is in Erikson's eighth stage, ego integrety cersus despair. In looking back at his experiences, Bob has accepted his life.
