Trust vs Mistrust
Bob(new born-12 months) was born into a loving and caring family of 3. As an infant, he'll depend on his mother's care. His basic needs such as feeding, changing diapers, and bathing are done and cared for by his mom, a loving and caring lady, and he'll feel safe and secure in his mom's hand. The crisis of trust vs. mistrust stage is either he sees the world as a bright and safe place he can trust, or it can be a miserable place, and he loses all trust to depend on anyone. -
Initiative vs. Guilt
Bob (age 3-6) is learning how to ride a bike. Even though he keeps failing, his mom encourages him to try more and stay by his side to cheer for his success. In Erikson's third stage, the crisis of initiative vs. guilt, is that Bob will learn that he is an independent individual who can make his own choice and purpose. With his mom's support along the way, the guilt of not being successful doesn't lead to doubt of being unsuccessful. -
Intimacy Vs. Isolation
Bob(age 20-early 40) meets Mary, the love of his life. He wants to marry her and start a family, and share the rest of his life with her. Erikson's six-stage is Intimacy Vs. Isolation, the crisis, is seeking companionship and love from another to build your family or being isolated from others and being afraid to develop your own family.
