  • Early Childhood - Derek

Derek, age 10, is doing well in school. His grades are high and doesn't have difficulties with attention or behavior. He feels confident and a sense of pride due to his accomplishments.
    Erikson's Industry vs. Inferiority.
Children of elementary age begin to distinguish their accomplishments and compare themselves to their peers. High levels of accomplishments in things like schoolwork, social groups, sports, or family life can help self-esteem. The reverse can cause problems into adulthood.
  • Early Adulthood - Derek

Derek is struggling to maintain an intimate relationship. He isn't satisfied with his current partner but doesn't leave her in fear of being alone.
Stage Six - Intimacy vs. Isolation
Adulthood mostly focuses on sharing your life with another. Problems in past stages can cause issues with self-worth and lead to issues with intimacy and relationship stability.
  • Late Adulthood - Derek

Derek spends his days visiting friends and staying active. He keeps in close contact with family and makes sure to keep up with his health. Despite being over 75 and having lost his wife two years age he is in good spirits and health.
Stage Eight - Integrity vs. Despair
As we enter our twilight years we look back and reflect upon our actions and accomplishments. If a person is proud of what they have achieved they can feel comforted and the reverse can cause despair and anguish.
