    Tom at the 3rd stage
    Tom at the age of 5 like to set up his own version of bowling. He would gather up old milk jugs and line them up at the end of the hallway, and bowl with his ball. Tom was in Erikson's third challenge, that of initiative versus guilt. He was able to plan his own activities to keep entertained. There for he was encouraged rather than discouraged, and ending up with feelings of guilt.

    Tom at the 4th stage
    Tom at age 9, growing up in the south, was being told constantly to be minding his manners. He had to say things like "yes ma'am", "no sir", "thank you", and "please". He began to take pride in being polite, and the compliments he received for doing so. Tom was in Erikson's fourth stage, industry versus inferiority. He was acquiring skills and knowledge of the culture around his. He took enthusiasm towards learning and mastering the skills. Therefore, he did not have feelings of inferiority.

    Tom at the 5th stage
    Tom at the age of 41 decided to take a new and better paying job in Utah. This job would allow him to provide for his family better, and help send his son off to college.
    Tom was in the challenge, of Erickson's fifth stage of generativity versus stagnation. He decided to be the generative person in middle adulthood who was focused on how to contribute to the well-being of the next generation.
