  • Early Childhood- Autonomy vs Shame

    At age 3 Anna began potty training. She had great difficulty at first having many accidents during the night and her parents punished her for them. She then learned to be ashamed of not learning a skill quick enough and began to associate success with love from her parents. If the focus was placed on encouragement instead of criticism, Anna might try to accomplish other things independently.
  • Adolescence- Identity vs Confusion

    Now 14 years old, Anna, is made fun of by her peers due to what she wears. She begins to second guess her style choices wondering if she should tone down the bright colors that she prefers to become more accepted. This stage will set the tone for her future sense of self. Will she listen to others or learn to follow her own voice?
  • Young Adulthood- Intimacy vs Isolation

    By age 19 Anna has showcased a desire to follow her own ideas and successfully connected with others who share similar goals. Being able to successfully attain a degree of autonomy allows one to connect with others in the same situation. Individuals who fail to gain independence have difficulty relating and bonding with others
