  • Minamata disaster

    Summary description: the Minamata disaster start in 1956. people dumped mercury by local chemical factories into the sea where fish and shellfish live. People got mercury poising and got mental retardation and if they were pregnant, they would have sever birth defects, hearing loss, paralysis, and even death. To prevent this from happening they designed a net to keep the fish from getting in that part of water where the mercury was at and the date was July 1995 when the water was mercury-free.

    Summary description: in 1962 the silent spring is when the landmark event that triggered the modern environmental movement. There was a lot of pesticides and that caused federal regulations to chemicals. Chemical company's tried to prove her wrong but studies proved she was right and her book got published. A ban of DDT got put in the united states in 1972.

    Summary description: global warming causes ice to melt. The melting adds water into the ocean, causing the sea levels to rise. The ice is declining more than 10% every year. It also affects the animals and environment in Antarctica

    Summary description: in June 5-16, 1972 was the first major international environmental congress meeting. The government faced push back and governmental issues. But in 1972 the meeting was successful and everything was better and okay.

    ESA law was enforced in 1973 which protects fish, wildlife, and plants that are either are endangered species, or they are in dangered. The endangered species effected us by not clean water and air and we need them for food supply. So the act got put on December 28, 1973.

    Summary description: the love canal was discovered in 1977. It was caused by dumping chemical waist to much. It affected us by killing residents and also harmed many people. We made specific Areas where you could dump chemical waist starting in 1980.

    Summary description: Bhopal disaster catastrophic chemical release event that happened December 1984. This caused deaths of several thousand people and it also caused long-term disabilities. In 1989 a legal statement provided a one-time compensation of $470 million for those with health issues that was caused from this event.

    Summary description: Chernobyl meltdown is a loss of cooling led to the overheating and melting of the reactor's core. During a safety test the operators didn't listen to the safety measures and deactivated safety system. Which led to an explosion.

    Summary description: another oil spill that had lasting ecological damage on marine life. It happened on March 24th, 1989, in Prince William Sound, Alaska. Around 11 million gallons were spilt.

    Summary description: Kyoto protocol was a written agreement that set legally binding the greenhouse gas (GHC). The 6 main gases are carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, hydrofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons, and sulfur hexafluoride.
