In 1783, the Treaty of Paris ended the war and recognized the sovereignty of the United States over the territory bounded roughly by what is now Canada to the north, Florida to the south, and the Mississippi River to the west

    When it successfully defended Baltimore Harbor from an attack by the British navy in Chesapeake Bay September 13–14, 1814. It was during the bombardment of the fort that Francis Scott Key was inspired to write "The Star-Spangled Banner," the poem that would eventually be set to the tune of "To Anacreon in Heaven" and become the national anthem of the United States.

The Missouri Compromise was passed in 1820 between the pro-slavery and anti-slavery factions in the United States Congress, involving primarily the regulation of slavery in the western territories. It prohibited slavery in the former Louisiana Territory north of the parallel 36°30′ north except within the boundaries of the proposed state of Missouri.

    A link to the state park website. Fort Sumpter is a sea fort in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina. The fort was not yet complete at the time and the confederate's called for evacuation. But they refused and on January 9, 1861, the first shots of the war were fired by the confederates. On Saturday, April 13, the fort was surrendered and evacuated.

    The modern day Pearl harbor with muesem.Pearl Harbor was a Navy base in Oahu, Hawaii. The base was attacked by 353 Japanese fighters, bombers and torpedo planes in two waves, launched from six aircraft carriers. All eight U.S. Navy battleships were damaged, with four being sunk. The Japanese also sank or damaged three cruisers, three destroyers, and an anti-aircraft training ship. 2,403 Americans were killed and 1,178 others were wounded. The following day, the United States declared war on Japan which started WWII.

    The Normandy landings, codenamed Operation Neptune, were the landing operations on 6 June 1944 (termed D-Day) of the Allied invasion of Normandy in Operation Overlord during World War II. Planning for the operation began in 1943. The amphibious landings helped the landing of 24,000 British, US, and Canadian airborne troops by shortly after midnight. The Allied fores turned the war back on Hitler and chased him back to Berlin.

    A good website with further information.On this day a group of islamic terrorists hyjacked four passenger planes and flew them into buildings. Two of those planes, American Airlines Flight 11 and United airlines Flight 175, were crashed into the North and South towers. A third plane, American Airlines Flight 77, was crashed into the Pentagon. The fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, was targeted at Washington, D.C.,but crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after its passengers tried to overcome the hijackers.
