Overall, the Civil War was fought between the Confederacy and Union about slavery. The Confederacy, the south, wanted slavery while the Union, the North wanted to abolish it. A compromise was not possible since both regions were stubborn about their belief and wouldn't budge on the subject. Many bloody battles were fought leaving the North and South in fragile conditions. -

The US came in later because of the Zimmerman telegram and the bombing of the Lusitania. Trenches were used in this war and were very useful, but also led to diseases and stalemate.
