    Electric Light Timeline Evolution

  • Incandescent Lighting - Arc Lamp

    Incandescent Lighting - Arc Lamp
The first arc lamp was created, in 1809: Humphry davy invented it and presented it to the Royal Institute in Great Britain. This lamp was made of two charcoal rods and a bank of batteries.
  • Arc Lamp Effects

Workday Extended, 1880: Workplaces started using electric light which means that they could have people work at night. This shifted the whole world's time schedule since people would get home from work later and also people could go out later into the night.
  • Incandescent Lighting - Electric Grid

    Incandescent Lighting - Electric Grid
Pearl Street station opened, on September 4th, 1882: Edison's first direct current generating station began supplying electricity to customers within a ¼ square mile. This station was in New York on pearl street.
  • Electric Grid Effects

Electricity was powered by central stations, 1882: After the invention of the light bulb inventors started searching for a way to provide electricity to everyone at once, this led to the power plant and electric grid system that we have today.
  • LED Lighting - Electroluminescence

    LED Lighting - Electroluminescence
In 1907 electroluminescence was discovered by British engineer Captain Henry Joseph Round. Electroluminescence is the emission of light through electrical currents.
  • Fluorescent Lighting - Fluorescent Lamp

    Fluorescent Lighting - Fluorescent Lamp
In 1927, Edmund Germer, with the help of Fredrich Meyer and Hans Spanner developed the “arguably” first fluorescent lamp. The lamp used UV rays from mercury vapor and glowed a greenish color.
  • Fluorescent Lighting Effects

Since there was a decrease in energy needed to power fluorescent lighting, it was a more environmentally viable light source that was still convenient for household use.
  • Fluorescent Lighting - Modernization

    Fluorescent Lighting - Modernization
George Inman, Richard Thayer, Eugene Lemmers, and Willard A. Roberts developed the first modern fluorescent light in 1934. It was 10 inches long with an electrode at each end, and used various phosphors, like zinc silicate.
  • LED Lighting - Available to the Public

LED Lighting - Available to the Public
In 1970 LED lights were brought to the market by the company Fairchild Optoelectronics
  • LED Available to the Public Effects

1970 (when LED lights were brought into the market) This new way to produce light lasted a lot longer than previous electric light bulbs specifically an increase from 1,500 hours of light to 25,000 hours of light for LED which made the investment for LED worth it. This forever changed household light use for the better, making it more efficient and longer lasting.
