Dominico Theotokopoulos was born in Heraklio, Crete in 1541. His father was a merchant and he had an older brother Manouso

He became an icon painter using the byzantine style but he was also influenced by the Italian Renaissance painters.

El Greco left Crete and went to Venice where he worked with Tiziano and Tintoretto. Later he moved to Rome.

He moved to Spain. He lived in Madrid at first and then he settld down in Toledo where he created most of his great works

His only son was born in Toledo in 1578 and he became a painter too.

He created his best work ''The burial of the Count of Orgaz'' in Toledo.

Dominicos Theotokopoulos died in Toledo in 1614. He is known with the name El Greco (The Greek).
